Surviving IFOA
Posted by Kim on Nov 4, 2010 in Events | 0 commentsThe Word Doctors Master Class that I hosted at IFOA in Toronto on Sunday, October 24 went well, despite some slight logistical problems.
Right off the top, writer Max Piesner received a scholarship from Harper Collins for the Humber School for Writers correspondence program. He will be working with author/mentor Tim Wynne-Jones on his YA novel.
Next up was Janine Marie Fracchioni, who read her winning entry from the IFOA/HSW Author for a Day Contest.
Nino Ricci spoke about how hard it is to figure out What Every Writer Should Know.
Finally, Kate Cassaday, a Harper Collins editor, and I did flash assessments of first pages of manuscripts submitted in advance by some brave souls who were in attendance.
After the event was over, I took Nino, Kate, and Janine out for a gossipy literary lunch that was part of the contest prize. Janine was also given an official IFOA author’s day pass that gave her free access to other events that day and evening, including entry to the IFOA hospitality suite at the Westin hotel, where she hobnobbed with authors Paolo Giordano and Alexander MacLeod.
I, meanwhile, went home and collapsed.
